There’s so much to do at The Chalet, most guests never leave the property. However, if you’re wanting to explore the local area and experience nearby outdoor adventures, there are plenty of things to do regardless of the time of year.
Snow Mobile Trails: .5 miles
Kalkaska is a highly sought after destination for snowmobilers from all over Michigan. Snowmobile enthusiasts love the fact that The Chalet is just around the corner from Sunset Trail, which opens up access to hundreds of miles of groomed trails winding throughout Northern Michigan. The Chalet is so more than just a Snowmobile Cabin for rent.
ATV Trails: .5 miles
In the spring, summer & fall, guests have access to hundreds of miles of ATV trails just moments away from The Chalet. These groomed trails wind all throughout Northern Michigan! In addition to groomed trails, there are plenty of areas nearby for the adventure seeker who enjoys more of an off-road challenge.
Manistee River: 12.6 miles
The Manistee River runs 190 miles through the northwestern Lower Peninsula. Like the Au Sable, it’s considered to boast some of the best trout fishing east of the Rockies. If fishing isn’t your style, the river offers so much more. Lazy days with friends on tubes, or a kayak adventure, are favorite activities for vacationers from all over the country.
Au Sable River: 20.6 miles
The Au Sable River runs approximately 138 miles from its source in Frederick Township all the way to Lake Huron. The source of the river is only 15 miles away from The Chalet! The Au Sable is considered one of the finest brown trout fisheries in the world and has been designated a blue ribbon trout stream by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Whether fishing, kayaking or simply taking in the amazingly beautiful sights, the Au Sable won’t disappoint.
Timber Wolf Golf Club: 12.6 miles
Just 15 minutes from The Chalet, you’ll find the #1 golf course in the Traverse City area. The club prides itself on providing excellent playing conditions and a friendly staff to ensure your visit is a special one. The course is open to the public, and rates are very affordable.
Shel-Haven Canoe Rental: 12.6 miles
If you’re looking for a fun time with family and friends, or just a relaxing day alone on the beautiful Manistee River, Shel-Haven offers a wide variety of trips to meet your needs. We love their easy, hassle free trips, and no time limits. The best part is that they’ll drive you up river so you can canoe back down to the canoe livery, so you won’t have to worry about pick up/drop offs. Northbound Outfitters: 19.1 miles
Northbound Outfitters offers canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, bikes, and tons of outdoor gear for your Northern Michigan adventures. Whatever you need, they’re sure to have it. In addition to offering the highest quality outdoor supplies available, they also feature upcoming events such as Canoe Marathons, and the annual Black Bear Gran Fondo on their website.
Hartwick Pines State Park: 20.3 miles
This breathtaking example of Northern Michigan wilderness is just minutes away from The Chalet. With over 9,500 acres to roam, Hartwick Pines State Park is an amazing place to visit for mountain biking, paddling, snowshoeing, hiking, cross country skiing, hunting and fishing. Inside the park is a 49-acre old growth pine forest and logging museum you won’t want to miss.
Ron’s Fly Shop: 20.3 miles
Ron & Ronda Rakoczy are Grayling natives who founded the Fly Shop back in 2014. Ron has been tying flies commercially for over 33 years, and has been a local fly-fishing guide for nearly 30 years. He is well known in the area for putting you right on the fish. In addition to guide services, their shop boasts an impressive assortment of outdoor and fishing gear from top brands.
